Sonic Liquid Level Gauge Development and Demonstration Project

Project Objective
Advance an acoustic technology to non-invasively and non-intrusively detect LPG level in a pressurized tank. Design, assemble, test, and demonstrate level sensing prototypes. The technology is environmentally friendly and is expected to improve the accuracy and safety of LPG level sensing while decreasing cost.

Technical description
Sound waves are applied to the outside of a container. Sound propagates through the metal plate in the form of bending waves of a certain frequency. The waves slow down when the metal plate comes in contact with a liquid. The change in the speed of sound indicates the level of liquid in the tank.

Duration: May 2001 - October 2002
